What does the "vitamins” word mean?

Vitamins are organic compounds naturally found in food. Vitamins help us absorb nutrients from foods we eat. Vitamins cannot be made by the body; they must be taken from food.

There are two types vitamins: water soluble or fat soluble. Water soluble vitamins dissolve easily in water. You can find vitamin C,B1 or thiamine, B2 or riboflavin and B3 or niacin, B3/niacin, B6/pyridoxine, folic Acid, biotin and pantothenic Acid as examples. The liver and fat soluble vitamins are stored within the liver and in fatty tissue. You can find vitamin D, E K, A, beta carotene, and other fat-soluble vitamins.

Vitamins are classified according to their biological activity. There are eight major types of vitamins:

  • A - Essential for healthy growth and health maintenance.
  • C is important for nerve function and energy production.
  • D – Essential for healthy teeth, bones and joints
  • E is needed for good reproduction and vision.
  • K - required for healthy muscles and nerves.
  • P - Essential for strong bones and teeth.
  • Q - Aids in digestion and absorption.
  • R - necessary for making red blood cells.

The recommended daily allowance (RDA), for vitamins, varies depending upon age, gender, or physical condition. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, (FDA), sets the RDA value.

For adults 19 years and over, the RDA of vitamin A is 400mg per day. Because it is essential for the development of the fetus, pregnant women should consume 600 micrograms per daily. Children ages 1-8 require 900 micrograms per day. Infants under one year of age require 700 micrograms per day, but this amount decreases to 500 micrograms per day between 9 months and 12 months of age.

Children ages 1-18years who are obese need 800 micrograms per day while those who are overweight need 1000 micrograms per day and children who are underweight need 1200 micrograms per day to meet their nutritional needs.

Children ages 4-8 years who have been diagnosed with anemia need 2200 micrograms per day of vitamin C.

2000 micrograms are required daily for good health in adults over 50. Due to their increased nutrient needs, pregnant and breastfeeding women need 3000 micrograms daily.

Adults over 70 require 1500 micrograms each day, since they lose around 10% of their muscle mass every decade.

Women who are pregnant or lactating need more than the RDA. Pregnant woman need 4000 micrograms daily in pregnancy, and 2500 per day after childbirth. Breastfeeding mothers need to consume 5000 micrograms every day when breastmilk has been produced.
