What does the term "vitamins" mean?

Vitamins are organic compounds that can be found in foods. Vitamins allow us to absorb nutrients from food. The body cannot make vitamins; therefore, they must be obtained from food.

Two types of vitamins exist: water-soluble vitamin and fat-soluble vitamin. Water-soluble vitamins dissolve readily in water. Some examples include vitamin C,B1 and B2 vitamins (thiamine), B2 and riboflavin, B3 and B6 vitamins (niacin), folic acids, biotin, pantothenic acids, and cholesterol. Fat soluble vitamins are stored in the liver and fatty tissue. Some examples include vitamin D and E, K, A and beta carotene.

Vitamins are classified according their biological activity. There are eight main groups of vitamins.

  • A - Essential for healthy growth and health maintenance.
  • C is important for nerve function and energy production.
  • D - Essential for healthy teeth and bones.
  • E - Required for good vision & reproduction
  • K - essential for healthy muscles, nerves, and bones.
  • P - essential for strong bones, teeth and tendons
  • Q – aids digestion of iron and iron absorption
  • R – Required for the formation of red blood vessels.

The recommended daily allowance of vitamins (RDA), varies according to age, gender, physical condition, and other factors. RDA values are set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

For adults 19 years and over, the RDA of vitamin A is 400mg per day. Because it is essential for the development of the fetus, pregnant women should consume 600 micrograms per daily. Children ages 1-8 require 900 micrograms per day. Children under 1 year old require 700 micrograms daily, while infants over one year old need 500 micrograms every day. This decreases between 9 and 12 months.

Children between the ages 1--18 years old who are overweight or obese require 800 micrograms per Day, while those who are overweight or obese need 1000 micrograms. To meet their nutritional needs, children underweight and obese require 1200 micrograms a day.

Children ages 4-8 years who have been diagnosed with anemia need 2200 micrograms per day of vitamin C.

Adults over 50 years of age need 2000 micrograms per day for general health. Mothers who are pregnant, nursing, or have a high nutrient need will require 3000 micrograms a day.

1500 micrograms is the recommended daily intake for adults aged 70+, who lose approximately 10% of muscle each year.

Women who are pregnant or lactating need more than the RDA. Pregnant and breastfeeding women require 4000 micrograms each day during pregnancy and 2500 Micrograms each day after delivery. Breastfeeding moms need 5000 micrograms each day when breastmilk production occurs.
